CLIVE MASON

Mr. Mason has a Masters of Architecture and a Bachelor of Environmental Design Studies Degree from the Technical University of Nova Scotia. At the time, TUNS was only one of two universities in Canada that provided a Co-Operative work/study programme that integrated theoretical design research with practical building applications. This included comprehensive Code reviews of projects using the National Building Code of Canada. Mr. Mason was awarded Distinction for this work and was the singular recipient of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada medal upon graduation.

Prior to this, Mr. Mason had attended several BCIT Code courses following his diploma from Pacific Vocational Institute in 1979. He continued to develop this expertise in the 1994 Architectural Institute of BC Building Code Seminar; the 1996 National Council of Architectural Registration Boards’ Building Design Exam on Code and Life Safety Systems; the Ontario Association of Architects’ seminar series on the Ontario Building Code in 2003; and the 2006 Building Officials Association seminar on the 2006 BC Building Code and 2007 Vancouver Building By-Law. Mr. Mason has completed the course work for the Certified Professional Programme and is presently a Certified Professional candidate.

In his work as a Certified Registered Professional and a Registered Architect, Mr. Mason has developed a holistic view of Code and Life Safety Systems design. He has experience at all levels of the development process; from urban planning and schematic design, through contract documentation, to construction administration, occupancy and beyond. This view enables him to recognize and develop integrated and cost effective Code Compliance and Life Safety systems solutions and, where practical, to provide alternative building code solutions to meet the Code’s intentions.

Mr. Mason has applied his Building Code expertise in reporting on and contributing to projects at a conceptual stage, a building permit stage, and during construction. He has done this on a broad scope of occupancy types such as schools, hospitals, retail, offices, and residential. Recently, he coordinated the Health and Life Safety requirements for a Public Swimming Pool in North Vancouver. In this project, The Pier: South Esplanade, Mr. Mason was the Master Plan Coordinator and resolved the complex Fire Department Access issues with Fire Officials on the 1.2 million square foot, 8 building development. Within the same development, Mr. Mason spear-headed Code Compliance on the hotel and convention centre, the twin tower high rise residential project, and a Public Swimming Pool. This work included a complexity of airspace parcel subdivisions and fire department access easements requiring Building Code and Life Safety systems compliance.

Mr. Mason is a registered Architect in British Columbia, is a member of the National Fire Protection Association.
