TODD MCCANN

Mr. McCann has gained a broad array of experience internationally in both fire protection and fire safety engineering, with continual exposure to Code consulting. After six years of part time study, he completed a Diploma of Mechanical Engineering at the Sydney Institute of TAFE, Australia, in 2002, and a Certificate in Project Management at the University of Sydney shortly after.

His career began in 1997 as a project manager and design engineer for a contracting company in Sydney, Australia. Here, Mr. McCann gained a practical understanding of contractual, design, installation, commissioning and maintenance issues. Eventually his primary role was complete management and design typically of large warehouse fire sprinkler installations utilizing Factory Mutual (FM) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Codes. Responsibilities in this role varied from detailed design including full hydraulic calculations, through to procurement of equipment for projects often exceeding $1 million (AUD).

Mr. McCann chose to move into a consulting role in 2000 with Australia’s largest multi-discipline (mechanical, electrical, fire, hydraulic, security and lifts) building services company. In 2005, he became the team leader of the Fire Protection division. He played an active role in their international fire committee, following two years in their London (United Kingdom) office. In addition to a wide project mix including road tunnels, airports, data centres, universities, hospitals, audit, highrise, commercial and residential, Mr. McCann’s tasks were extensive. These tasks covered all fire protection design aspects including fire sprinklers, fire detection and alarms, gas suppression, and special hazards. His fire safety engineering experience had a similar project mix, and utilized his skills in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to analyse fire growth, evacuation strategies, smoke control systems and fire management strategies (interface with other building systems), for the purpose of developing alternative solutions.

Prior to moving to Canada, Mr. McCann’s most recent role in Australia was between 2006 and 2008, where he was the engineering manager and associate director of a mid-size multi-discipline consulting engineering company. His responsibilities included the quality of design and delivery of major projects, financial forecasting, resource management, training, business development and reporting of the above to the board of directors.

As a project manager, Mr. McCann’s role at CFT Engineering is primarily in Code consulting, development of alternative solutions, field and drawing reviews and negotiations with authorities.

Mr. McCann is a past member of the Institute of Engineers Australia (IEAust) and the Society of Fire Safety. He is seeking similar membership within Canada with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC (APEGBC) and/or the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of BC (ASTT). He is also undertaking the BC Institute of Technology (BCIT) course on the BC Building Code - Part 3.
