Robert Heikkila, P.Eng., C.P., MBA
Mr. Heikkila has a diverse educational and professional background with wide experience in Building Code consulting and fire protection engineering. He completed a Diploma of Technology in Building Technology at the B.C. Institute of Technology in 1979, then worked as a designer of commercial and light industrial HVAC systems with Dominion Construction in Vancouver. Mr. Heikkila completed his Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Civil Engineering at the University of B.C. and joined the Vancouver office of Rolf Jensen & Associates, Ltd. in 1985. From 1985 to 1991, Mr. Heikkila provided Building Code and fire protection consulting services for a wide variety of large and small projects across western Canada as well as in Ontario. Mr. Heikkila was an Associate with Rolf Jensen & Associates, Ltd. He left the firm in 1991 to obtain an MBA at the University of Western Ontario where he was named to the Dean's Honour List. He joined CFT Engineering Inc. in 1993, and is a principal of the firm.
During his career, Mr. Heikkila has completed a number of ongoing education programs related to fire protection engineering, on subjects such as smoke management, computer fire modelling, fire protection system design, objective-based design, structural fire protection analysis, and field review, through organizations such as the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE), the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the University of British Columbia. With CFT Engineering Inc., Mr. Heikkila has provided Building Code and fire protection consulting services on various projects throughout B.C. and in Alberta, as well as Certified Professional services in participating municipalities.
Mr. Heikkila has been involved in virtually all aspects of Building Code consulting and fire protection engineering, including Code reviews, specialized analyses, inspections, systems reviews and approvals, and client relations. Since 1985, he has produced several hundred technical reports and analyses, developed numerous Building Code equivalencies, negotiated approvals for specific projects with most major municipal building authorities in B.C. and Alberta, and acted as the Certified Professional for more than 50 projects.
Mr. Heikkila is registered as a Professional Engineer in B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan, and is a Certified Professional (C.P.). He is a past member of the Building Codes Committee of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of B.C. (APEGBC) and past chair of the APEGBC Fire Protection Subcommittee. Mr. Heikkila is a past chair of the C.P. Committee, which is the advisory body for Certified Professionals. He is a member of the National Fire Protection Association, the Society of Fire Protection Engineers, and is a past APEGBC representative on the City of Vancouver Equivalency Review Panel.
